"CONSERVATION BREEDING PROGRAM"

Tucuman Amazon

(Amazona tucumana)

Endangered in their native habitat of Bolivia, Tucuman Amazons are listed on CITES I, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.  Their numbers in the wild are declining due to habitat destruction and over-trapping.    Here at R&B Aviaries, Tucumans are one of the species we keep in "special breeding programs."  Most of our Tucumans are wild caught imports and the domestic bred Tucumans we have in the program are  paired to ensure genetic diversity within the species.   All Tucuman offspring are parent reared when possible to assure reliable future breeders.   We do not offer Tucumans as pets; our goal is to help sustain a captive breeding population of these wonderful parrots.  We do however interact with other breeders of Tucumans to add or exchange offspring to ensure pure genetic bloodlines.

SPECIES PROFILE:

Tucumans are small Amazon parrots that measure around 12 inches long and have a pronounced black scalloping to their feathers.  They have a red crown and are said to be sexually dimorphic which can be determined by the number of red covert feathers in their wings.   Males have about 8 red coverts in each wing, with females having much fewer to no red coverts.   We have found this marked dimorphism to run true to sex but all offspring are dna sexed for added certainty.
