Panama Amazon

(Amazona ochrocephala panamensis)

Renowned for their gentle nature and extensive vocabularies, Panama Amazons are quite possibly the quintessential companion Amazon.   Panama Amazons are not often seen in North American collections and they are highly prized as companion parrots.   Often confused with the Yellow-Crowned Amazon, Panamas are truly special birds with endearing personalities.   We here at R&B Aviaries are privileged to work with this species and offer them as life-long companions.

Typical of Amazons, Panama's love water and frequent bathing is a must to keep them in good feather.   A large "Amazon sized" cage stocked with plenty of toys is a must for these highly intelligent Amazon parrots.

Species Profile:

Panama Amazons are 12-13 inches in length with the general plumage being green.   Typical of Amazona ochrocephala, Panamas have yellow head coloration but in contrast to others of this species, their yellow is restricted to the forehead and forecrown.  The back of the crown is tinged with blue.  Often confused with the Yellow-Crowned Amazon, ( Amazona ochrocephala ochrocephala), Panama's do not exhibit the orange to reddish spots on either side of their upper mandibles but tend to be more horn colored.   Panama Amazons are native to  Northern Colombia and Panama.
