Hawk-headed Parrot
(Deroptyus accipitrinus)
Hawk-headed parrots are magnificent birds from South America. Excitable and dramatic, Hawk-heads are excellent companions for the experienced bird keeper. These highly intelligent parrots are very affectionate and many are excellent mimics. Hawk-heads are active and a large parrot cage stocked with toys is a must for these birds. We occasionally offer hand-fed Hawk-heads to experienced bird-keepers.
Species Profile:
Hawk-head Parrots are unique parrots. The neck feathers are red with thick blue edging. These feathers can be raised when the bird is alarmed or excited as can be seen in the picture above. This red and blue coloration is also found on the breast of Hawkhead Parrots. They are about 13.5 inches in length and the tail is edged in green and blue. There is distinctive white streaking to the dark brown cheek and the crown is a dull white color in adults.
