BLACK-HEADED CAIQUE

(Pionites melanocephala)

Black-Headed Caiques are without a doubt, one of the most charming of all parrots.  These outgoing, energetic birds make great companions for households containing children.  Toys, toys and more toys are a must for these playful birds.  A wide parrot cage is suggested as Caiques can often be found laying on their backs playing with their favorite toy.  Caiques are inquisitive and fearless little birds and will often hop around on the floor investigating everything in sight. They are able to mimic a few words but the real charm is the affectionate nature of these delightful little birds.   Black Headed Caiques are easy to keep and feed, we suggest pellets with the addition of fresh fruits and veggies as the mainstay of your Caique's diet.

Species Profile:

Native to South America, Black Headed Caiques are small parrots measuring around 9 inches long.   The forehead, crown and nape are black and stand out in stark contrast to the bright green plumage of the back, wing and tail feathers.   The cheeks, throat, thighs and flanks are a bright orange.  Black Headed Caiques have a creamy white abdomen and breast.
